Specialist Eyecare Services

Sensory Needs considered

We tailor each eye exam to the person, for example this helps people with sensory issues, neurodiverse people, people with fatigue  issues, undergoing chemotherapy,  Mental Health difficulties and anxiety.

If you want to book yourself or someone with us for a specialist eye exam, please email with as much detail as possible. The more we know before the day, the less stress with us asking questions, and the more eye care we can do.

Examples of helpful information : Any diagnoses or suspected diagnoses, What you think would be issues or might be helpful for us to know. What your main concerns are and what might help (for example we can book time to get used to the room, to us, or to build up confidence) Any fears / previous issues. Any information on past prescriptions or glasses wear is very helpful too.

If booking for someone else : Whether the person acknowledges or is aware of the issues - is there anything we should avoid or warn about; Whether there have been any previous issues with glasses; Any medical information and medication; Whether they can communicate; Whether they have anger / frustration issues and how to avoid them if known.

Occupational / Hobby needs

We work with you to find the solution that works in your life, we encourage you bring in the tasks or measurements needed so we can help you better.

Useful information to send us before the eye exam :

Any previous issues, pictures of unusual workspaces, examples of tasks that you want to do. Previous prescriptions can also be useful, as it means we can investigate specialist lenses or solutions before your visit, so more chance we can order in frames for you to try or answer questions on the same day.

Headache / Migraine.

We specialise in headache and migraines, and investigate any relevant eye or brain function tests and help you work out where to go next if the issues are not eye related. One think a lot of people assume is that migraine always includes headache, in fact you can have visual migraine symtoms without head pain.

Useful information would be : Where any pain is; How sharp/dull it is; Do you have any vision change during or around the time of the headache; How often; Are there any patterns with when you have last eaten/drunk/other patterns? Is is after exercise / at night / when you wake / when you lie down / stand up?

Dementia Care

We have been both primary and support carers for several people with Dementia, and have refined our eye exam techniques and systems over the years to work around the needs of people with dementia. We take a common sense approach, and work with carers and patient to find a respectful and practical solution.

If you want to book someone with us for a specialist eye exam, please email with as much detail as possible. The more we know before the day, the less stress for the patient with us asking questions, and the more health care we can do.

Examples of helpful information : Whether the person acknowledges or is aware of the dementia; Whether there have been any previous issues with glasses; Any medical information and medication; Whether they can communicate; Whether they have anger / frustration issues and how to avoid them if known.

Young Children

We tend to recommend that children with no concerns about their vision have their first routine eye exam between the age of 3 and 4. This is usually covered by the NHS eye exam fee, and we go by their level of interest and ability. We have pictures, matching games, toys and we use techniques that mean we can still get information about their eyes even if they won't or can't talk to us. We are also experienced in children who want glasses and try to get them, so don't worry, they won't get them unless they definitely need them and will work well with them !

Helpful information : Past eye history, Any fears/worries, Any Special interests, whether you want to do a visit to get used to things first, and any information you think might help. Also if we shouldn't offer sweets / balloons etc, as we try to make the first exams a fun experience, so don't want to suggest sweets if you don't want them to have them !
